Bratkartoffeln - it's not a stir-fry!

As this post is mainly for my colleague Phoebe (but also mainly for anybody else...) who is of Singaporean-Chinese/Kiwi background and therefore does not speak German I will write it in English. Germans know everything about Bratkartoffeln anyway...

We've been talking about me cooking Dinner today and when she asked me what I would cook I said: Bratkartoffeln. Off course she had never heard of this before as it is not something which is common in either one of her two cultures.

So, Phoebe, here we go: Bratkartoffeln is a traditional German dish which is made from sliced raw potatoes, which are to be fried with some oil in a frying pan - as in below picture.

Once they start getting cooked and are getting a bit of a tan you add chopped onions and let it cook for another while. You then add some ground roasted paprika and salt and pepper, which makes the Bratkartoffeln look like in the below picture.

While they still cook you can start frying eggs in a seperate pan, because this is what you would usually eat them with. Some people prefer Sülze (Porks head meat in aspic) though. On your plate it would look like this:

This is the vegetarian version of Bratkartoffeln, most people in Germany would say that it is definitely a 'must' to have diced bacon in it. Oh, I almost forgot: It will always come with sliced Gherkins, no matter if you have it with eggs or Sülze... Guten Appetit!
